Conant girls cruise to 11th win
The Conant girls basketball team pulled off its second straight double-digit home win on Friday, defeating Stevens 57-32.
The victory improved the Orioles to 11-1 overall and have now won two in a row following the team’s only loss of the season to Bow on Jan. 18. Of Conant’s 11 wins, 10 have come by double digits with Friday’s being the fourth by at least 20.
With a strong offensive performance in the first half, Conant quickly put the game out of reach. It was a 19-7 game after the first quarter and a 14-point advantage in the second made it a 40-14 lead at the half.
Freshman Madison Springfield scored a game-high 20 points in limited minutes after scoring 11 of Conant’s 19 points in the first quarter. She also finished with seven assists, six rebounds and four steals.
Senior Margaret Maloy scored eight points with four rebounds and sophomore Brooke Juntunen had six points and five rebounds coming off the bench.
Sophomore Katie Chadbourne scored seven and freshman Sarah Gonsalves added six. Of the eight Conant players on the roster, seven scored in Friday’s win.
Conant hit 12-of-20 from the free throw line, including Springfield connecting on 8-of-11 attempts.
Entering play this week, Conant was one of six Division III teams with at least 10 wins and one of four with one loss or less.
Of the Orioles’ six remaining opponents, they have already defeated four of them.
The Orioles will host Monadnock tonight, as they try to pull off the season sweep of the Huskies, and Hopkinton tomorrow in the only meeting between the two schools.
