Having played just three weeks earlier, there was little surprise when it came to Tuesday night’s rematch.

The Mascenic boys had withstood Wilton-Lyndeborough’s late fourth quarter run and prevailed with a 12-point win on Jan. 8. On Tuesday, it was a third quarter spurt that brought the Warriors a large halftime deficit to within striking distance. But again, the Vikings were too much in the end, grabbing a season sweep of WLC with a 57-38 victory.

“Our Achilles heel all season has been a let up in the third or fourth when we have a decent lead,” said Mascenic coach Jay Starr. “But I thought we responded well after their run.”

The Warriors struggled on offense in the first half, scoring just 11 points over the opening 16 minutes of play. It allowed Mascenic to go up by as many as 18 in the second and take a 28-11 lead into halftime.

“The first half we were simply very lethargic, rusty whatever you want to call it,” said WLC coach Ken Garnham. “Our offense just killed us and we never recovered from that.”

But the improving WLC group slowly chipped away. An aggressive effort on defense led to a few stops and a 7-2 run to begin the third got the Mascenic lead down to 12. With over three minutes left in the quarter, senior Cole Letourneau’s lay-up helped surpass the Warriors’ point total from the entire first half. At the 2:48 mark, Kyle Pratt brought WLC to within 10.

“We felt that we’d make a run at them and we did,” said Garnham. “Offensively we started doing some better things in the second half.”

But three solid defensive stands by Mascenic kept WLC from cutting its lead to single digits and Jared Stauffeneker’s jumper in the closing seconds made it a 37-25 game going into the fourth. And unlike the first meeting, that was where the Vikings put it away.

Freshman Roman Ojala scored the team’s first seven points of the fourth, helping Mascenic put together a 14-6 run that pushed the lead to 20 with four and a half minutes to play.

For the Vikings, any win will help. Entering the night, they were among a large group of teams between three and five wins and there is a real urgency to keep pace. Tuesday’s win put them at four overall and in the top 15 in Division III with a crucial game against Monadnock, a team right below them, on Friday.

“This game is a huge win for us,” said Starr. “Any win we can pick up now is a bonus for us. We’re trying to scrap and fight our way into the playoffs.”

As for the Warriors, they are a team just trying to take steps forward. After nine straight losses to begin the season, WLC picked up its first win on Jan. 22 and played Concord Christian tight in a two-point loss last Friday. So the signs of improvement are there despite a disappointing first half performance on Tuesday.

The goal on defense for WLC was to limit the opportunities of Stauffeneker and senior Jalen Rines and force others to beat them. Letourneau drew the tough assignment of guarding Stauffeneker, while Pratt had to stick with Rines as the Warriors used a triangle and two.

“Our goal was to shut off their two best players [Stauffeneker and Rines] and we had some success, but some of their other kids came through and played well,” said Garnham.

In the end, Stauffenker finished with a game-high 19 and Rines added 14, but Mascenic also got a nice boost from the role players. Sophomore Shane Rautiola had 10 and Ojala scored all nine of his points in the fourth. Junior Matt Cyr had five first quarter points.

“Those two guys can’t do all our scoring. We’ve got to spread it out. The more guys that get involved, the better we’re going to be moving forward,” said Starr. “And the other guys really stepped up.”

Senior Casey Melrose led the Warriors with 13, but was the only one in double figures, as senior Ethan Howard and Pratt each scored seven.

Mascenic hosts Monadnock on Friday and WLC travels to Nute on Tuesday.
