Dance around Monadnock begins Feb. 17 in Keene

An English Country Dance series with the theme “Dance Around Monadnock” is planned for different locations around the Monadnock region from February through May.

On Sunday, from 2 to 5 p.m., the series begins at the Historical Society of Cheshire County in Keene. Mary Jones of Turners Falls, Mass., will be teaching dances to appeal to novice and experienced dancers alike. Music will be provided by Carol Compton on keyboard and recorder, and Thal Aylward on violin and viola.

English Country Dance is a form of social dance that harkens back to the days of Jane Austen and “Pride and Prejudice,” but its roots extend further back in time. Its traditions and innovations continue right up to the present.

Future dances on March 17, April 14 and May 19 will be held at Bass Hall in the Peterborough Historical Society, the Fitzwilliam Town Hall and the Nelson Town Hall, respectively.

Beginners and singles are welcome and all dances are taught throughout the session. No special clothing is required, but comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended.

Admission is $10. The series is sponsored by The Monadnock Folklore Society. For more information, call 762-0235 or visit www.monadnockfolk.org.
