ConVal girls hockey scores first goal
With one minute left in last Wednesday’s final home game against Concord, ConVal senior Haley Webber made history.
Up until that point, the school’s girls hockey team had not scored a goal. And not just in that game, but for the entire first season.
Then it finally happened. With the Cougars trailing 4-0 late in the third period, senior Caroline Trowbridge won a face off deep in Concord’s end and Webber, the team’s starting right wing, collected the puck behind her, spun and beat the Concord goalie with a high stick side shot.
“It kind of happened in slow motion,” said Webber. “I couldn’t believe it went in.”
The enthusiasm was hard to mask.
“Everyone was standing for that,” said coach Courtney McKay. “They’ve been getting really close. They’re excitement was amazing.”
Webber received the game puck and will be the first player to have a ‘G’ next to her name in the score book.
“I don’t think it’s hit me that it’s the first goal ever,” said Webber.
ConVal was 0-11 entering last night’s season finale at defending champion Hanover.
“They’ve made incredible improvements,” said McKay. “Although our games might not always show it with the scores.”
