WLC girls fall in playoff opener

All Wilton-Lyndeborough girls basketball coach Dennis Claire wanted was his players to give it their all in Tuesday’s Division IV playoff opener at Newmarket.

Claire knew it was not going to be easy for the Warriors with two starters, seniors Deanna Davidson and Casey Jenkerson, along with sophomore reserve Lorrie Blais out with injuries, and junior Sami Bosquet returning to the lineup for the first time since Feb. 5 after being diagnosed with mono.

But it could not have started out any better for the Warriors. They took a 15-8 lead after the first before things took a turn for the worse. WLC was outscored 19-2 in the second quarter and never recovered in a 52-38 loss to end its season.

“The score wasn’t really an indication of how we played,” said Claire. “It was just one bad quarter. We just couldn’t put the ball in the net.”

The Warriors finished with a 7-12 record and were the 11th seed in the Divison IV field.

The deficit was 27-17 at the half and grew to 14 entering the fourth. With a little less than three minutes left, WLC cut the Newmarket lead to just eight, but could not get any closer.

“We had three possessions in a row when we stopped them, but we also had three possessions where we only got off two shots,” said Claire.

Bosquet scored 11 of her team leading 17 points in the first quarter. Sophomore Kelsey Randlett added six and sophomore Jenna Bragdon chipped in five.

WLC shot just 22 percent for the game, while putting up 22 more shots than the Mules.

After 10 games, the Warriors stood at .500. But they won just two times over the final nine games, including four straight to close out the year with Bosquet, the team’s leading scorer, missing three.

“We didn’t get where we wanted to,” said Claire. “But I have no complaints with how we finished the season.”

WLC defeated Newmarket by 12 in the season opener before dropping the rematch by 29 at home on Jan. 28.

All eight higher seeds advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals
