Letter: Support energy upgrades for Rindge

To the editor:

I hope that Rindge voters will vote in support of Article 14, which proposes committing $17,300 to make energy improvements at the town offices, library, and police station (electricity consumption). Work performed last year with ARRA funding and through the maintenance efforts of our DPW department resulted in a cash savings of $11,000 compared with 2011. But that doesn’t tell the whole story. If Rindge used energy at the same rate in 2012 as it did in 2011, the additional cost would have been $25,500 at 2012 energy prices.

The money spent on making energy improvements should be considered an investment rather than an expense because the benefits will continue to accrue year after year. Both the Board of Selectmen and the Budget Advisory Committee unanimously support this investment.
