Letter: Kingston will help improve our schools

To the editor:

I have taught English at Mascenic for 14 years and am a New Ipswich taxpayer. Many of my fellow teachers and I disagree with Carolyn Cormier, that her friend Chad Gibson is the “best” for Mascenic. He has had his “two terms” and under his leadership, teacher morale at the high school has never been lower.

Most recently, six computer-based business electives were cut. This means we lose a young, vibrant teacher who led our students to excel at the DECA Conference. Meanwhile our board is saying a position has not been cut – this is how the English department went from 6 teachers to 4 with “no cuts” – just because someone retires, or is promoted to Vice Principal, does not mean the position ceases to exist. Cullen Madden was hired to fill the position and has done a super job. Now he is being told there is “no position.” And with our emphasis on 21st century skills, one would think the chairman of the board would question why we are cutting computer-based electives.

There is also the fact that our teachers have no contract. None of us entered teaching for the money but we feel we deserve some respect. Those of us who are tenured don’t expect a “forever job” but we do expect a right to due process. Under Chad’s leadership, our board is saying that if we won’t give up that right we don’t get a contract.

Jim Kingston is pro education, teachers, students, and is fiscally responsible. He and his wife raised the type of students Mascenic can brag about. He served his country as a Marine. I think that he will make a mature, educated contribution to our School Board. I am supporting Jim for School Board and hope you will, too.

Well said. Carolyn Cormier's recent letter to the editor made it sound as all (or at the very least a majority) or Mascenic district teachers support Mr. Gibson in his re-election and from personally speaking to several, most teachers do not.
