Letter: Taking back our elections
To the editor:
Very soon in this very month of March, our New Hampshire House of Representatives will have the opportunity to defend democracy by passing House Concurrent Resolution 2 (HCR2); a bill that would urge Congress to begin the process for a constitutional amendment establishing that only human beings, not corporations, are entitled to constitutional rights.
We would then join 11 other states that have already called for an amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission – an horrendous decision. This decision gave corporations the right to spend unlimited sums to influence elections, and they used it freely in 2012. They not only used it, but they also remained silent when asked for the names of their donors. So much for a transparent democracy.
I believe that New Hampshire prides itself on being informed, independent and free to make its own choices. Last year, Barnstead, Bradford and Nottingham passed resolutions calling for an amendment, and several other NH cities are working toward doing the same. The people of New Hampshire are establishing themselves as leaders in this fight; now it’s time that our Legislature listen to their constituents and pass this important resolution.
Please feel free to contact your representative(s) and ask them to attend and vote ‘Yes’ on HCR2.
