WILTON — Tom Herlihy and Chris Carter will be returning to the Wilton Sewer Commission to fill vacancies after two of the three board members resigned last week.

During its regular meeting Monday, the Select Board met with the Sewer Commission’s remaining member, Tom Schultz, to discuss replacements for Jim Tuttle and John Jowders, who both resigned their commission seats following its last meeting on March 21.

Select Board member Dan Donovan informed the board that he had met with both Tuttle and Jowders on Saturday to discuss their resignation. Both had indicated that disagreements between commission members was the underlying cause of their decision.

Schultz informed the board that he had approached multiple former members of the Sewer Commission to gauge their interest in being appointed to fill the position until next year, when the positions will be placed on the March ballot. Of the five people that he approached, he had received two positive responses, he said.

Herlihy and Carter had both indicated they would be willing to rejoin the commission, said Schultz. He had also contacted former sewer commissioners Bob Duquette and Charlie McGettigan, but both said they were not interested, he said. Schultz had also sent a letter to Jowders, asking him to reconsider his resignation, but Jowders replied that he was not interested in rejoining the commission.

“It’s unfortunate. His knowledge and experience would have bee appreciated, but it is what it is,” said Schultz of Jowders’ decision.

When asked for a recommendation, Schultz said he would be comfortable accepting Carter and Herlihy onto the commission.

“I would accept both,” he said. “I respect both for their experience.”

Following a short non-public session to discuss personnel, the board voted unanimously to accept the recommendation of Schultz to appoint Herlihy and Carter to the board.

“I’ve known both of these guys a long time. I think they’re well qualified and will do a good job,” said Donovan of Carter and Herlihy. The board agreed to contact Herlihy and Carter to have both report to the town offices at their earliest convenience to be sworn in by the town clerk.

The Select Board will meet next in the Town Hall on Monday at 6:30 p.m. The Sewer Commission and Water Commission meet on the last Thursday of the month in the Town Hall at 6:30 p.m.
