Letter: Time to reverse influence of money
To the editor:
Good citizens of the Monadnock communities, shall we aim to be Number 12 — the 12th state to formally pass a resolution calling on Congress to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United? HCR2 (an “overturn Citizen’s United” resolution) has passed out of the NH House in a bipartisan vote and it needs our help in the NH Senate.
Please be in touch with your senator or any and all senators urging them to vote yes for HCR2.
We all saw the negative effects in November’s election with money trying to take the place of votes. Last year, Super PACs received over $100,000,000 from business corporations. The top 32 Super PAC donors, contributing an average of nearly $10 million each, matched all of the money that both President Obama and Mitt Romney raised from small donors combined — that’s $313 million from at least 3.7 million people giving less than $200 apiece. And on top of this; without any transparency. This isn’t the democratic process we signed up for in our elections.
Wouldn’t Granny D be howling if she were here? Let’s do her proud and get our democracy back on track by getting the toxic influence of money out of the picture.
