Ayotte gained an adversary for life
To the editor:
As our beloved country seems to have been swept up in the recent madness, it is vital to resist it by staying calm, resolute, and by holding our elected officials accountable for their craven and cynical actions last week.
As a person who has been shot at (a long time ago and luckily it just missed me), this is not abstract to me.
Shame on Senator Ayotte for voting to block gun reform.
It’s despicable that a small bloc of senators were able to block life-saving legislation.
Senator Ayotte decided to stand with the NRA’s Washington lobby and reject expanded background checks, even though 89 percent of people in New Hampshire support it.
Background checks are common sense. And they work. In states where background checks are required for handguns, far fewer women are shot to death by their intimate partners.
The people most excited by our senators’ votes are criminals -- because they’ll continue to have access to no-background check gun sales.
And 33 Americans will continue to be murdered with guns every day in this country. Senator Ayotte should be ashamed. She has just acquired a lifelong political adversary in me.
