Smith tosses no-hitter in rout
Conant senior strikes out five for 2nd shutout
Conant senior Kelsey Smith threw a no-hitter on Tuesday and the Orioles improved to 3-0 on the season with a 13-0 victory over Hopkinton in five innings.
Smith, who missed all of last season with a torn left ACL just one-year after earning Division III first-team all-state honors, struck out five Hawks, walked three batters and hit two. But despite the high number of base runners for a no-hitter, Smith handled the situations well and never gave in to the Hopkinton lineup.
“They’re pretty solid,” said coach Tom Lambert of Hopkinton. “They had a decent pitcher, who threw hard.”
It was Smith’s third win of the season and she has yet to allow an earned run in 16 innings of work. She posted a shutout of Fall Mountain in the season opener and then allowed just one hit and struck out 10 against Monadnock.
“She threw well,” said Lambert. “She’s thrown well all year.”
And while Smith had been dominant in the circle, the Conant lineup has been the same in the batters’ box. With the 13-run explosion on Tuesday, the Orioles have now scored 47 runs this season.
Sophomore Katie Chadbourne had an RBI single in the first and added a two-run base hit in the fifth. Senior Teresa DiTommaso drove in a run in the first and also knocked in two with her second inning triple.
Sophomore Ivy Chalke, who handled the pitching duties last year, drove in both third inning runs with a double.
“One through nine, it doesn’t matter whose in there they’re hitting the ball hard,” said Lambert. “Everybody’s contributing.”
Conant will host Campbell, the last team to defeat Smith in the 2011 D-III quarterfinals, in the home opener on Friday and will travel to Mascenic on Monday for a make-up.
