Conant walks off with win
Orioles improve to 4-0 with extra inning victory over Campbell
The Conant softball team walked off with its fourth win of the season on Friday, defeating Campbell 6-5 in eight innings.
The Orioles forced extra innings after an RBI double from senior Kelsey Smith with two outs in the last of the seventh, following sophomore Ivy Chalke’s single. A bases loaded single from sophomore Vanessa Lemire to score freshman Devon Blood in the eighth gave Conant the win.
“They kept battling back,” said coach Tom Lambert. “We had a nice two-out rally.”
Entering Monday’s contest at Mascenic, Conant stood at 4-0 — just one of two unbeaten teams remaining in Division III.
The Orioles twice rallied from behind and never led until Blood, who singled as a pinch hitter to lead off the eighth, scored the winning run.
Smith finished with eight strikeouts over her eight innings of work and settled down after giving up two runs in the first.
After scoring double-digit runs in each of their first three games, the Orioles’ offense struggled early on before breaking through in the fourth. Down 4-1 entering the last of the fifth, Conant scored three times to tie the score.
Campbell went ahead in the top of the seventh, but the Orioles came back once again. After Smith shut them down in the eighth, Conant ended it on Lemire’s RBI single.
Chalke and Lemire each finished with three hits, while junior Heather Bilodeau, Katie Chadbourne and Smith had two hits apiece.
Conant travels to Campbell on Wednesday.
