ConVal defeats Hanover in extras
Clough scores go-ahead run, shuts door in 8th
ConVal junior Ivon Clough tripled and scored in the top of the eighth and then worked out of a jam in the bottom of the frame to give the Cougars a 3-2 extra inning win over Hanover on Tuesday.
With the tying run on third and the potential winning run on second, Clough struck out the final two Marauders to earn the win. Clough pitched all eight innings, striking out nine and allowing just three hits and two runs for his first complete game of the season. It was his second win in three starts this year.
“They had what would have been the winning run on second, but he worked out of it,” said ConVal coach Mike Marschok.
ConVal took a first inning lead thanks to a pair of hit batters and two walks. Hanover would tie the game at one in the last of the second.
In the fifth, Tyler Aborn singled to score Will McPhee from third for a 2-1 advantage.
One inning later, Hanover tied the game after a triple and passed ball.
“We made some mistakes,” said Marschok. “It wasn’t our best, but we battled through.”
After neither team could push the go-ahead run across in the seventh, the game went into extra innings — the first one for both teams this season.
Following Clough’s triple, a passed ball brought him home for what proved to be the winning run.
It was ConVal’s third win overall and second on the road as they climbed over .500 for the first time since a season opening win at Milford.
The Cougars return to action on Friday at John Stark.
ConVal will also host Monadnock on Monday and Hollis/Brookline, a team they lost to 3-1 on April 17, on Tuesday.
