Man, 24, faces heroin charge
PETERBOROUGH — A Peterborough man was charged with possession of heroin after he fled from police on Wednesday evening.
Alan Wheeler, 24, of Peterborough was arrested outside Riverview Apartments shortly after 6 p.m., according to Peterborough Capt. Ernie Belletete. Sgt. Richard Nelson went to the apartment complex after police got a report of a man driving after his license had been suspended. Nelson identified Wheeler, whose license he knew had been suspended, as Wheeler was getting out of a 2005 Ford van. When Nelson told Wheeler he was being placed under arrest, Wheeler ran into the woods behind the buildings. Nelson chased Wheeler and took him into custody after a short pursuit.
Belletete said Nelson found heroin on Wheeler after he was arrested. After getting a search warrant for the van, police found drug paraphernalia inside. Police got a search warrant for an apartment unit at Riverview, and Belletete said drug paraphernalia was found there as well.
Wheeler was charged with operating after suspension, second offense, disobeying an officer, resisting arrest, aggravated DWI and possession of a narcotic drug believed to be heroin. The heroin possession is a felony-level charge.
On Wednesday, Wheeler was taken to Valley Street Jail by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department in lieu of $25,000 cash bail. On Thursday, he was arraigned in Hillsborough District Court, bail was set at $10,000 cash and Wheeler was taken back to Valley Street Jail. A probable cause hearing will be held today in 8th Circuit Court, Jaffrey.
