A little rain Saturday afternoon was no deterrent for local Cub Scout troops, as they met at MacDowell Dam in Peterborough for their annual Chuck Wagon Derby. Sixty-five boys, aged six to ten, gathered together to learn new skills and collaborate together. Each year, the Chuck Wagon Derby is given a central theme. This year, it was Harry Potter.

In between working through six stations of Cub Scout skills ranging from knot tying to local bird identification and physical fitness exercises, the boys played a quick Quidditch match, complete with volunteer scout masters acting as the elusive Golden Snitch. Scout masters and Cub Scouts alike donned capes and caps and brandished wands, while learning cooperation skills.

Around the MacDowell Lake area, skill stations were set up for the local scout troops to complete. At the end of the day, each troop was graded on their ability to replicate skills and work as a team. Along with their proficiency at each of the stations, scouts got extra points for showing good spirit — coming up with a pack cheer, and getting into the spirit of the event by dressing up or bringing Harry Potter related items.

The overall winners of the day were Pack 2 from Antrim and Pack 33 of Jaffrey, followed by Pack 73 of Windsor, and Pack 530 of Nelson.
