Town losing a valuable resource
To the editor:
Peterborough is losing an indispensible resource. Pine Hill Child Care Center (PHCC), located at ConVal, has been told to close its doors on July 1. However, PHCC is the only local childcare center providing for children six weeks to 10 years from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. They are state certified; accepting financial aid for disadvantaged families. The child care center has been a learning laboratory. Interns, completing a childcare certification course, participate in classroom activities. They observe child development and actively engage with our children.
PHCC is also a Waldorf-inspired childcare center. This philosophy of education uses a holistic approach to the “schooling” of children. To witness a Waldorf-inspired classroom is surreal, almost magical. The teachers are astounding. The PHCC classroom, while alive with the exuberance of childhood discovery, also has a sense of serenity. The energy is both gentle and exciting; a tapestry woven together by masterful teachers.
Children spend much of the day exploring nature. Research supports the significant impacts time in nature can have on young children and their physical, social, emotional and intellectual development. PHCC has a specialized niche implementing traditional and alternative education to best meet the needs of the children. In order to keep this magic going, PHCC created A Child’s Nature LLC, a registered non-profit.
The staff and a group of dedicated parents have been searching Peterborough for a new site. Unable to find space, A Child’s Nature is moving to Greenfield and losing half of its families. I am disheartened that the Town of Peterborough and its creative residents could not support moving this important program to a more centralized site.
A Child’s Nature is holding a pledge drive to help with the financial expenses of moving to Greenfield. However, I am asking the Town of Peterborough not to let this prized program move away. The right space is available here and needs only to open its heart to an extraordinary investment — our young children.
