Conant pulls off 9-0 win over WLC
Orioles complete sweep and turn focus to making playoffs
The Conant girls tennis team has lucked out this season when missing a player from its top six.
The Orioles were without No. 2 Courtney Dillon on Tuesday, but their opponent, Wilton-Lyndeborough, was also without its No. 1 Maddy Bacon. So it evened things out and Conant went on to earn a season sweep of the Warriors with a 9-0 victory.
The Orioles improved to 10-2 with the win entering Wednesday’s trip to Sanborn, while WLC fell to 2-9 going into its match at Kearsarge. It was the Orioles’ seventh straight win overall and 10 in 11 matches since dropping the season opener at Monadnock. For the Warriors, it was their fifth straight loss and third by a 9-0 score.
Conant’s No. 1 Allina Bennett, who lost to Bacon in the first meeting, played WLC’s No. 2 player, Sarah Higgins, and won 8-1.
And from there, the matches were the same as the first meeting on May 6, which Conant won 7-2.
Conant freshman Shannon Bennett defeated Casey Montesfusco 8-2 in the No. 2 match-up.
Vickie Roach, the only senior on Conant’s team, won 8-4 over WLC’s Taylor Webb. Ashley Rogers pulled off an 8-2 victory over Cassie Dumont, while Hannah Clark swept Naomi Wight 8-0.
The No. 6 match was between two players who did not play in the first meeting and Hannah Duncan won 8-1 over Jordan Kross.
The Bennett sisters played their first high school doubles match together and won 8-1. Roach and Rogers teamed up for an 8-3 win and Brandi Pugh and Helen Soney had an 8-5 win.
Conant will end its regular season today against Monadnock. WLC travels to Stevens today and will close out its season at home against Division II ConVal on Friday.
