Let’s hear from the taxpayers
To the editor:
We only recently enrolled our three year old child into the Pine Hill Child Care Center (PHCC). I did not, however, anticipate my deep sadness and confusion regarding its closure.
Do Peterborough residents know what is happening and the great value of what is about to be lost? Here is some of what I understand about the situation. Pine Hill Waldorf School in Wilton decided to “let go” of PHCC. ConVal then chose to not renew the site lease. ConVal, understandably, wants to reclaim the space for high school students. There are two modular buildings in the parking lot where some students attend class. These students deserve to be in the high school.
There is more to this story. The small PHCC space was designed to be a child care center. Heated floors, the playground, observation rooms, classroom plumbing and a kitchen all make a specialized area intended to meet the needs of small children. Taxpayer money will be used to renovate this space for adolescents. The image of tearing down a playground or the miniature preschool sinks is heartbreaking.
Let’s take it a step further. A new preschool will be opening at the elementary school. Many of the preschool students “kicked out” of PHCC may well attend this First Friends preschool. What about the infants and toddlers who have also been “kicked out?” Taxpayers will pay for this renovation and also to bus interns daily to PES for their child development courses. Let’s take it one step further. It was prudent to support the high school gymnasium renovation in order to make it ADA compliant. How much of this massive addition is non-ADA upgrades? How on Earth could this exorbitant design not have included space for four extra classrooms? This is outrageous and senseless. Meanwhile, there has been very little publicity about these decisions. Maybe now we will hear more opinions on the matter. Better yet, why not let the taxpayers decide what they wish to pay for?
