Is stolen sign a sign of the times?
To the editor:
Civic pride in Greenfield took a hit for the second year in a row recently when someone stole the “Welcome” sign on Route 136 entering from Peterborough.
This follow’s last year’s shameful episode when someone stole a flower box from a similar sign entering Greenfield from Lyndeborough.
The fact that these two thoughtless crimes were most likely unrelated makes it even more disturbing as we hope this isn’t an indication of a trend.
The GIVers (Greenfield Independent Volunteers) keep these signs and flowers every year as a mark of town pride and one can only speculate what goes through the minds of these vandals. If this was some end-of-school-year prank — the joke is over and it’s time to return the sign. After all, you can’t display it anywhere, all it can do is get you in trouble. Return it on some dark night and there will be no questions.
We’ll maintain our civic pride in the town we love, but how about a little help?
