Youth teams to host big tourneys

Next two weekends will give fans plenty to see

Over the next two weekends, youth baseball and softball fans will have many games to choose from, as three local teams get set to host tournaments.

It is the time of year when baseball and softball all-star teams and Amateur Athletic Union squads begin the long summer road of games and travel.

Starting on Friday, the New England Ravens AAU Invitation Bash Tournament will begin at 2 p.m. and go through Sunday’s championship round.

During the weekend of July 5-7, the Ravens 14 and under squad will host the AAU New England Regionals at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, while the Monadnock 12 and under softball all-star team will host the Babe Ruth District 5 tournament in Peterborough.

Over the three days of the New England Ravens AAU Invitation Bash Tournament, a total of 20 teams will compete at four separate locations. There will be 11 teams in the 14 and under category and nine in the 13 and under. They’ll be playing between Franklin Pierce University, South Meadow School in Peterborough, as well as at fields in Marlborough and Westminster, Mass.

The Ravens 13 and under team will play its first game versus the Worcester Warriors on Friday at 6 p.m. in Westminster. The Ravens 14U squad is scheduled for the 8 p.m. game at FPU against the Cape Cod Thunder.

Both teams will play two games on Saturday. The 13U team will return to Westminster for an 8 a.m. contest versus the Central Mass. Wolfpack and play the Granite State Storm at 2 p.m.

The 14U team plays the NH Grizzlies at 10 a.m. and the NH Bobcats Blue squad at 2 p.m.

Sunday’s semifinals and championship games will all be played at FPU beginning at 8 a.m. The 13U championship games is scheduled for 4 p.m., followed by the 14U title game at 6 p.m.

The Monadnock 12 and under all-star softball squad is one of five teams set to play in the District 5 tournament at Adams Playground.

Monadnock begins the tournament on Friday with the only game of the day versus Souhegan Valley at 6 p.m. at Ecco Field.

Pool play continues on Saturday with Monadnock taking on Sugar River at Ecco Field in the opener at 9 a.m. followed by a match-up with Claremont at noon on Picard Field.

On Sunday, Monadnock will play it final pool play game against Kearsarge at 9 a.m. at Ecco Field.

The top four teams advance to the single-elimination portion of the tournament.

The semifinal games will be played simultaneously at 11:30 a.m. with the championship game set for Ecco Field at 2 p.m.

In the season opening tournament in Barrington, Monadnock finished runner-up after going 4-2 overall.

The 12U state tournament will be held July 12-14 in Londonderry, while the regionals are scheduled for July 19-21 in Pittsfield, Mass.

The top two teams from next weekend’s District 5 tournament will advance to the state tournament.

The 14U Ravens finished its regular season with a 33-3 mark overall and 11-1 in Open Division III play.

A total of 48 teams play in the 14U Open Division with the top 16 qualifying for the New England Regionals.

The Ravens will host either four or eight teams for the weekend, with games beginning at 8 a.m. on July 6. They will be either the second or third seed overall in the tournament.

The New England Regional is broken up into four, four-team pools. The winner of each pool advances to play in the Final Four tournament July 12-14.
