Beach closed for milfoil treatment

FRANCESTOWN — There will be no swimming at Scoby Pond for a portion of next week, as the town attempts to curb some non-native milfoil found in the water.

Milfoil is an invasive, submersed aquatic plant. It can be controlled with hand harvesting, tools such as long-reach rakes or weed razors and herbicides. The town has hired Aquatic Control Technology, a Sutton, Mass., company to chemically treat the northern and eastern shores of Scoby Pond on Tuesday. As a result, the town beach at Scoby will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday and possibly Thursday, depending upon the timing of the treatment.
