BENNINGTON

Man indicted after theft of car, dryer from same home

BENNINGTON — A Keene man who allegedly hit an unoccupied Bennington residence twice this spring, stealing a 1976 Triumph Spitfire in late April and a dryer in May, was indicted this month on felony charges.

A Hillsborough County Grand Jury indicted Michael Flagg, 55, of Keene on charges of theft by unauthorized taking — third offense, and attempted theft by unauthorized taking — third offense. Flagg was also indicted on a misdemeanor charge of criminal trespass.

On May 9, Flagg was arrested by Bennington Police Chief Steve Campbell after Campbell allegedly found Flagg and Dawn Deschenes, 51, of Wilton, attempting to load a dryer into a vehicle at a vacant summer home on Whittemore Lake Road.

On Thursday, Campbell said he had gone to check on the residence, where the Triumph had been stolen on April 25, and happened to run into Flagg and Deschenes.

“If it had been a few minutes earlier or later, they’d have gone off with it,” he said about the dryer. Campbell said the Triumph, which is not in good condition, had actually been returned to the home and was sitting in the exact spot from which it had been taken. He said Flagg denied any knowledge of how it came to be returned.

According to the indictments, Flagg has twice been convicted on theft charges, in 1991 and 1995.

Campbell said no date has been set for Flagg to be tried in Superior Court.

He said Deschenes, who was charged with theft and trespassing related to the May 9 incident, is scheduled for arraignment in 6th Circuit Court, Hillsborough, next week. The charges against her are misdemeanor level.
