Garden talks, tea set for Sept. 14

The Hancock Woman’s Club will host Roger Swain and Ellen Ecker Ogden for “Garden Talks and Tea” at the First Congregational Church on Sept. 14 at 1 p.m.

Roger Swain is well recognized by millions as host of “The Victory Garden,” television’s longest-running gardening show. More recently, he co-hosted “People, Places and Plants on HGTV,” which features Roger’s commentary, “Food for Thought.” He has been science editor of “Horticulture” magazine since 1978 and has written five books on gardening. He often can be found at work in the orchard and gardens of his New Hampshire farm. The theme for Roger’s talk will be on “Garden Tools.”

“The Art of Growing Food” is the title of Ellen Ecker Ogden’s lecture which is based on techniques and designs from her book, “The Complete Kitchen Garden.” She co-founded “The Cook’s Garden” seed catalog in 1984 as “the cook” and introduced varieties of herbs, greens and vegetables to home gardeners. This led her to taking cooking classes in Venice, Italy. Her kitchen garden designs and articles have appeared in numerous national magazines including “Organic Gardening,” “Eating Well,” and “Country Gardens,” among others. She teaches basic foundational techniques to help gardeners learn how to create an edible landscape with an artist’s eye towards design, productivity and ultimately flavor. Her goal is to simplify the process of growing food, to make it easy and accessible for everyone to enjoy.

Admission is $20 per person which includes a one-hour talk from each of the speakers, and refreshments in the Vestry after the program. Proceeds from this program will benefit the club’s Community Needs and Scholarship fund.
