Mountaineers lose 1st game of season, 16-7
The Monadnock Mountaineers 7th/8th grade football team suffered its first defeat of the season on Sunday, falling to unbeaten Windham 16-7.
The Mountaineers entered Sunday having won their first three games by shutout and outscoring opponents by a combined score of 102-0.
The contest was a rematch of the state championship game two years ago, won by Windham.
Despite only running eight plays in the first half, the Mountaineers took a 7-0 lead into the half after a blocked punt by Josh Arruda was picked up by Dylan Rochford and returned 64 yards for a second quarter touchdown.
But in the third quarter, the Mountaineers turned the ball over three times and Windham took advantage of the third and final one.
One play after Danny Spezzaferri intercepted a Wolverines’ pass, Monadnock fumbled the ball right back and it led to a Windham score and the two-point conversion with just over a minute remaining in the third. With that, the Mountaineers trailed for the first time all season, 8-7.
The Wolverines would add a second touchdown in the fourth quarter and Monadnock was unable to respond, turning the ball over on downs on the Windham 21-yard line.
Carter Jack Cormier led the way with 18 tackles, followed by 15 from Daniel Curran and Tyler Faulkner’s 11.
The Mountaineers only accounted for 44 yards of total offense with Cormier’s 19 rushing yards leading the way
