Let voice be heard on Syria
To the editor:
Accurate news reportage is hard to find these days. But the website commondreams.org does a pretty heroic job of seeking and presenting the truth. In a piece there on Sept. 17, writer Norman Solomon reveals some alarming facts about our current activities in Syria.
We Americans should all feel proud that our voices helped prevent a bombing campaign in Syria. But the Washington Post revealed last week, as reported by Solomon, that our CIA has already started funneling weapons to the Syrian rebels (allegedly a mix of Islamist, Al-Quaeda related, and American allied fighters). These weapons add firepower to the vehicles and other war paraphernalia already sent to the rebels by our state department. The Post calls this a “major escalation” of our involvement in this war.
Assuredly, and in direct contradiction to the expressed wishes of the American people as expressed by public opinion, the U.S. is circuitously escalating a militaristic campaign in Syria. These actions, as Solomon writes, will “fuel the flames of a horrific war.”
Solomon provides the following information on an opportunity for Americans to express our opposition to these activities. Go to rootsaction.org and find the topic, “StopWeaponstoSyria.org.” At this web address, you can join a nationwide campaign that is sending messages of disapproval to our senators and representatives. On Sept. 16, more than 15,000 people sent messages to their congressional representatives opposing the delivery of weapons to Syria. Please take a moment to send such a message if you wish to stop our escalation of this war.
