In a perfect world, every high school team would win their last game of the season and send their graduating seniors out on a high note. That’s just what the Mascenic Vikings tried to do Friday afternoon as they took on Monadnock in Mascenic’s senior game. Monadnock, however, had other designs.

The Vikings had a good shot at a victory for most of the game, with only one Husky goal coming in the first half on a shot that rolled just under goalkeeper Melinda Krook’s left leg. Krook was impressive in goal, at one point stopping a barrage of three or four Monadnock shots in a row, culminating with a glove tip that caromed off the top left crossbar and went wide, and she led the Vikings to a mere 0-1 halftime deficit.

The Huskies came out fired up in the second half, and put the game away with back-to-back goals midway through the period, eventually winning 3-0. After the game, emotions were running high for the Mascenic team, including seniors Mariah Somero, Valerie Thibeau, Kaylee Bertram and Shelby Bertram, and their coach Selena Shaw.

“It’s always tough to hit your final game,” Shaw said. “Those four seniors have worked hard all year. Coming in to a season where you want to be successful all year and you don’t quite have the season that you have dreamed of as your senior year – it’s tough. It’s tough for me too, because I want that for them after four years of playing.”

Somero played one of her best games of the season in her senior game, challenging Monadnock’s forwards up and down the field and fighting for the ball with great tenacity.

“I think it was all adrenaline,” Somero said. “I couldn’t even feel my feet. I felt like I was just dreaming the whole time. I felt like no matter what ball came to me, I have to get this.”

Senior Kaylee Bertram was one of Mascenic’s brightest stars this season, and she was everywhere in Friday’s game, streaking along the sideline with ball on stick in a red-and-white blur.

“We played a good game,” Bertram said, “so I’m proud of all the girls. I feel like we played our hearts out at every game. It was just a few unlucky games, that’s all.”

The Vikings had a down year in the win/loss column, finishing at 2-12. But as Shaw saw it, there were more positives to take away from their season than the record might show.

“I think that they’ve all just grown so much as teammates, as individual field hockey players. From the beginning of the season to the end – huge improvement, in the seniors and all across the board. I just tell them as long as they’re going to keep working, they can get there – for anything, not just field hockey. For anything.”
