Poor cell service delays  hiker rescue at Monadnock

JAFFREY — Three students from Gill, Mass., were separated from their school group at about 1 p.m. Tuesday, while hiking Mount Monadnock. Park officials and personnel from other agencies located the lost hikers uninjured near the White Cross Trail just before 4 p.m., according to a press release issued by the Law Enforcement Division of N.H. Fish and Game.

The three hikers from Northfield Mount Hermon School lost the trail around 1 p.m., Fish and Game said, and one of them phoned a teacher to notify the rest of the group. The teacher then called park staff. Poor cellular service prevented Fish and Game officers from locating the hikers via GPS coordinates, but one of the search teams found them at 3:45 p.m.

The hikers were found unharmed by a team of Fish and Game Conservation officers, mountain patrol rangers and a volunteer.
