Man convicted in child porn case

Sentencing scheduled for Dec. 12

PETERBOROUGH — A 28-year-old Peterborough man was convicted last week of six counts of possession of child pornography, charges that could lead to a sentence of up to 90 years in state prison.

Michael Donnelly was found guilty of having images depicting child sexual abuse on a family computer.

Peterborough police opened an investigation in January 2010, according to Peterborough Sgt. Michael Chapdelaine, after Donnelly’s mother took the computer to a family friend for repair.

“The friend found images of pornography on the computer and brought it to the Police Department,” Chapdelaine said. Police obtained a search warrant and located many images in a folder labeled “Mikey’s Stuff.”

Chapdelaine said the images of child sexual abuse had been downloaded from sites where people post and share images. He said there is no indication that any of the images were of local children, or that Donnelly knew any of the children in the files.

Chapdelaine said it took some time for police to interview the various people who had access to the system. Donnelly was indicted on the charges in Hillsborough County Superior Court in July 2011.

According to Chapedelaine, Donnelley admitted during the investigation that he had downloaded child pornography on occasion in the past, and said he had deleted it.

Donnelly is free on $25,000 cash bail, pending sentencing, which is scheduled for Dec. 12. Among the conditions of Donnelly’s bail, Chapdelaine said, are that he have no contact with anyone under the age of 16 and no access to the Internet.
