The secret meeting that defined our politics

This is an expansion of two Viewpoints in the Nov. 26 Ledger-Transcript about Republican failures to represent their constituents. One piece signed by Rep Jill Shaffer Hammond and nine other dedicated representatives quoting Dr. Thomas Sherman of Rye, says the Republicans are guilty of malpractice regarding the health of more than 50,000 New Hampshire citizens in rejecting Medicaid expansion. The other by a former representative, Jennifer Daler, speaks of Sen. Andy Sanborn’s partisanship. He had stated before the 2012 elections that he would help the disabled and now he’s refused to expand Medicaid. And this refusal deprives our state of billions of dollars that would pay for this coverage.

Well, we need to know that this partisanship denial of any Democrat plans began long ago with a secret meeting of GOP leaders. On inauguration day, Jan 20, 2009, GOP House and Senate leaders along with Newt Gingrich and Frank Luntz plotted to sabotage, undermine and destroy America’s economy. They didn’t care who was hurt. I’d heard their one goal was to destroy President Obama’s presidency, but didn’t know it went to this depth. The economy was already in bad shape due to the Bush/Cheney war costs (that were kept out of the budget), and by no tax increases on the wealthy.

In Robert Draper’s book “Do Not Ask What Good We Do; Inside the US House of Representatives,” he tells about this four hour meeting of GOP legislators (Paul Ryan, Eric Cantor, Pete Sessions, Jon Kyl, Jim DeMint, Tom Coburn, John Ensign and Bob Corker along with Luntz and Gingrich). Gingrich has confirmed this meeting took place during an interview with Al Sharpton’s June 12, 2012, “Politics Nation.” The plan was to show united and unyielding opposition to the president’s economic policies and constantly keep blaming the president’s policies for the bad economy.

This secret meeting decided they would stop supporting any stimulus legislation even though they had done just that for Bush/Cheney. They would and have threatened a government shutdown over almost anything. They’ve walked out of debt ceiling negotiations that caused us a lower credit rating. And they’ve filibustered over 300 bills and voted no on any bills brought to the floor including jobs bills and disaster funding.

Sessions later said in an interview with “National Journal” they should follow the model of the Taliban as they fought the president — that insurgency may be required if the Democrats didn’t give them opportunities to disrupt their processes. So, given these odds, it would seem that what President Obama has accomplished is nothing short of a miracle.

Now – tell me why these leaders are still in office? Why aren’t they in jail? Why has the media failed to report on this meeting and its goals? Why isn’t the media demanding to have this plot exposed for what it was? Why isn’t this treason? Why aren’t these GOP leaders labeled traitors? It would seem that their actions were subversive and intended to weaken the power of the United States.

The Constitution says by giving aid and comfort to the enemy you commit treason. It would seem then that any act that weakens U.S. power gives enemies aid and comfort. It’s time to call a spade a spade. We must rise up and spread the word about this evil in our midst.
