Conant’s girls basketball team battled back from a halftime deficit to earn a win over Monadnock in their first game of the season. The Orioles trailed 22-18 at halftime, but turned it on to open the second half. With 2:17 remaining in the third quarter, senior Heather Bilodeau hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 26 apiece. After a Conant defensive rebound and a long outlet pass led to a layup by sophomore Sarah Gonsalves, the Orioles took the lead for the first time, and it was a back and forth game from there.

The Huskies took the lead back at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but it was short-lived, as senior guard Katie Chadbourne hit one of her three three-pointers to put Conant on top once again.

The Orioles would not surrender the lead again, but Monadnock made it interesting; after Shannon Lotito hit a three to cut the deficit to four with under a minute remaining, the Huskies got the ball right back and had a chance to make it a one-possession game.

However, Conant’s Kelsey Martin pulled down a rebound and dribbled down the sidelines deep into Monadnock’s defensive end, where she was fouled hard, sliding into the first row of the bleachers and writhing in obvious pain. The Conant faithful held their collective breath as Martin slowly got up and made her way to the line; after all, the junior guard was just back after being sidelined the entire preseason with a lower back injury. Martin waved off the officials as they urged her to allow an injury substitution to shoot the free throws for her. She stepped to the line and calmly hit both ends of a one-and-one to give Conant a 47-41 lead with 14 seconds remaining.

Martin had five points, seven rebounds, an assist and a steal. Gonsalves was the high point scorer for the Orioles, netting 13 to go along with seven rebounds and three blocks. With a little work on her footwork and post moves, Gonsalves could be absolutely dominant in the paint this season. Freshman Megan Wheeler played a confident, well-rounded game at the point, finishing with eight points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Shannon Hart led the Huskies with 12 points.

Conant is in action again tonight against the Mascenic Vikings (0-2). The game tips off at Conant’s Pratt Auditorium at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the Mascenic/Conant boys game.
