The annual Keene holiday basketball tournament is always a good measuring stick for area teams. There’s nothing like playing three games in as many days against a variety of foes to showcase a team’s strengths and expose their weaknesses. Conant, ConVal and WLC all took that test this weekend, and while none passed with flying colors, it was still a positive experience for all the teams involved.

Conant and ConVal both stumbled on the first day of the tournament against two top teams, dropping into the losers bracket.ConVal faced eventual champion Hinsdale, a well-rounded squad that got excellent play out of their stars, point guard (and tournament MVP) Skylar Bonnette and center Bridget Bourne. ConVal had trouble getting the ball in the basket in this game, losing 39-18, including a third quarter where the Cougars failed to score a single point. In fact, senior guard Jess Nerz was the only ConVal player to score in the second half. Nerz finished with seven points.

On day two, the Cougars bounced back with a win over Monadnock, 40-30. Nerz led the Cougars with 19 points in the win; sophomore guard Jordan Mills scored 10 and freshman center Hannah Reinfrank added four points and nine boards.

That win set the Cougars up for a matchup with Conant on the final day of the tourney. The Orioles struggled in their opener against Fall Mountain, who would go on to the championship game before losing to D-IV upstart Hinsdale in double overtime. Conant, playing without sophomore center Sarah Gonsalves and junior guard Kelsey Martin (out with injuries), couldn’t stop Fall Mountain’s tough frontcourt. 6-foot, 2-inch center Peighton Ahlberg was a force to be reckoned with in the paint; even when she was on the bench with foul trouble, the Orioles couldn’t capitalize, and they lost 63-39. Senior Katie Chadbourne led Conant with 18 points, including three three-pointers.

Even after a tough loss, coach Dan Rosenfield was happy with his players if not the outcome.

“No one started to panic, no one started pointing fingers; they stayed calm,” Rosenfield said.

That poise paid off in the Orioles’ second game, in which they dispatched Newport 46-25. Gonsalves returned to the action after a day of rest and provided a paint presence, and Chadbourne once again led the way, this time scoring 22 points.

On Sunday evening, Conant and ConVal squared off and played a tight game that came right down to the wire. Jess Nerz was ConVal’s leading scorer once again; she scored 12 but came up short on a potential game-tying three at the end of regulation. Jordan Mills scored six of her eight points during a furious fourth-quarter run to help close the gap.

Katie Chadbourne scored 14 in the game for Conant and Gonsalves added ten in the low-scoring win.

“We won two out of three games without playing anywhere near our best basketball,” Rosenfield said.

Chadbourne was named to the all-tournament team for her performance.

“There’s no question that Katie deserved to be on the all-tournament team,” Rosenfield said.

The WLC Warriors were the only area team to pull out a victory on the first day of the tourney. They survived a tough battle against Newport; up by three in the waning seconds, the Warriors overcame three extremely controversial calls against them to hang on for the victory. In a 30-second span, Newport was awarded a time out during what appeared to be a loose/jump ball situation and then gained possession on a missed out of bounds call. Finally, WLC’s Ally Schwab went to the line for a one-and-one with Wilton up one with seconds remaining. After bouncing the ball to Schwab, the officials conferenced to determine whether or not it should be a one-and-one; a WLC player wandered away from the paint during the discussion, and the officials promptly called a lane violation and gave the ball back to Newport. The Warriors stood fast on the final possession and won the game 45-44. WLC’s Kelsey Randlett, Sara Holka and Sami Bosquet each scored nine in the win.

WLC then faced Fall Mountain, losing 57-42 behind Schwab’s 15 points and Bosquet’s 12. The loss slotted the Warriors into a Sunday afternoon matchup with Keene, in which the Warriors fell to the Blackbirds 65-48.
