First Saturday contra dance Saturday

The first Saturday contra dance will be held at the Peterborough Town House on Saturdaybeginning at 8 p.m.

Steve Zakon-Anderson will be calling accompanied by fiddler Brendan Carey Block.

Zakon-Anderson has been leading contra dances for 25 years. He has performed at festivals from Alaska to Florida.

Block, 2000-2001 U.S. National Junior Scottish Fiddle Champion, has been performing since age 10. In May 2009, he was invited by the American Folklife Center to perform at the Library of Congress and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., as the youngest featured artist ever chosen for the “Homegrown — Music of America” series.

An introductory workshop before the dance begins will be offered. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for students and seniors. For more information, call 762-0235 or visit The Monadnock Folklore Society has presented contra dances and concerts of traditional music since 1982.
