Police: Driver under influence in Mass. crash
A Rindge man is facing a DWI charge after being involved in a two-vehicle crash on Route 202 in Winchendon, Mass., last week that led to the death of an 80-year-old Winchendon man. But he is not being accused of causing the accident.
Glenn Austin, 54, of Rindge was arrested and charged with operating under the influence, second offense, after his pickup truck was hit by a car driven by Joseph Larochelle, 80, of Winchendon, according to a press release issued by Winchendon Police Lt. David Walsh.
At about 3:06 p.m. on March 19, Walsh wrote, Larochelle was driving a 2000 Oldsmobile Bravada northbound on Route 202 when he lost control of the vehicle and veered into the southbound lane. Austin was driving south in a 2002 Ford F-150 pickup truck, which hit Larochelle’s vehicle.
Larochelle was seriously injured in the accident and died at the scene as a result of those injuries.
Police arrested Austin at the at the accident scene.
Austin was arraigned on March 20 in Winchendon District Court in Gardner, Mass., according to Tim Connolly, a spokesperson for the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office. He was released on personal recognizance and is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on April 3 in Winchendon District Court.
