Town appoints a new welfare director

WILTON — Resident Andy Clifford walked into the Town Hall recently for some free tax preparation, and walked out the new welfare director for the town.

“I’m still reeling a little,” Clifford told the Select Board at its Monday meeting. “I came in to have my taxes done, and walked out realizing I had just had a job interview.”

At Monday’s meeting, the Select Board approved the appointment of Clifford to the position. Clifford will be taking over for the current director, C.J. Gorius. Gorius has been the welfare director since March 2010, and will be leaving the position officially today, in anticipation of moving out of town.

“Based on my past experience with C.J., I’ve been very impressed with what he’s done for the town,” said Select Board Chair Dan Donovan, mentioning that among other accomplishments, Gorius was the driving force behind a town-wide job fair organized last year.

Clifford told the board that while in conversation with Gorius, the two thought he might make a good fit as a replacement. Clifford has experience volunteering to assist with tax preparation for the AARP.

“That was an extremely rewarding experience, and I’m sure this will be much the same in terms of the rewards,” Clifford said.

Gorius will be staying on the job for a few additional days to train Clifford, and will also be available for consultation for the first few months he is on the job, Clifford explained to the board.

Welfare director is an appointed hourly paid position, with an annual salary of up to $6,829. The town’s welfare budget for 2013 is $50,000.

“I think you’ll find the town relies heavily on it’s volunteers,” Donovan told Clifford. “You’re one of many, and we thank you.”

The Select Board will meet next on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Town Hall. The welfare office is open by appointment only, and can be contacted at 654-9451.
