Man arrested in June assault of cop

KEENE — A Keene man has been arrested and charged for allegedly assaulting an off-duty Jaffrey police officer on Gilbo Avenue in Keene last month.

Justin Bean, 19, of Keene was arrested and charged by Keene police on Sunday on a warrant issued by the Keene Police Department, charging him with misdemeanor-level simple assault, in connection with the alleged assault of Jaffrey Officer Joseph Golinski shortly after 11 p.m. on June 17.

Keene Lt. Steve Stewart said by phone Wednesday that police arrested Bean at the city’s skateboarding park downtown at approximately 3 a.m. Sunday.

Bean was transported to the Cheshire County House of Corrections following his arrest and held without bail until his arraignment at the 8th Circuit Court, Keene, on Monday. At the arraignment, a judge set bail at $1,000 cash. As of press time Wednesday, Bean remained incarcerated.

Stewart said police obtained information through interviews with witnesses that led them to identify Bean as a suspect in the case. “He is believed to have been the only one involved in the assault,” Stewart said. Despite the arrest, Stewart said a motive for the alleged assault is unclear.

Golinski was reportedly in Keene on the evening of June 17 with two other off-duty officers — one from Jaffrey and a second from Nashua — to watch the Bruins playoff game at Lab’n Lager. Later in the evening, Golinski was assaulted near his vehicle parked behind a restaurant downtown; his friends found him beaten and on the ground, police said.

Stewart said Golinski sustained a concussion, as well as cuts and scrapes in the alleged attack. The assault reportedly took place after the three off-duty officers found two men, one of whom was Bean, trying to let air out of Golinski’s car’s tires. Golinski’s friends pursued one of the men on foot, while Golinski stayed behind. It was then, a witness told police, that Bean began beating Golinski in the head and face.
