Tax rate relatively flat, school portion down

MASON — The Mason tax rate is set this year at $24.90 per $1,000 of value, a 0.6 percent increase over last year’s rate of $24.75.

A resident whose home is valued at $200,000 can expect to pay $4,980 under the new rate.

The town portion of the tax rate went up by 38 cents, coming in at $8.20, a 4.9 percent increase over last year’s rate of $7.82. During Town Meeting this year, voters approved a budget of $1,699,543, as well as $50,000 in road repairs, $21,750 for two warrant articles, requesting new or replacement firefighting equipment, and $33,000 worth of additions to various capital reserve accounts.

The state education portion of the rate is up by 2.5 percent this year, going from $2.38 last year to $2.44.

The increases were somewhat offset by the local education portion of the tax rate, which went down 1.9 percent from $13.40 to $13.15 this year.

The county rate also dropped by four cents, from $1.15 to $1.11, a 3.5 percent decrease.
