Wind spreads brush fire

PETERBOROUGH — Strong winds whipped up a permitted brush fire on Carley Road Saturday afternoon, requiring firefighters to spend a couple of hours extinguishing a blaze that covered about three-quarters of an acre.

“It was an accident,” Peterborough Fire Chief Joe Lenox said on Monday. “We got a call from the owner. It was just a fire that got out of control. It was pretty far from any houses.”

The call came in at about 5:30 p.m. and firefighters had put out the fire by 8:15 p.m., according to Lenox. He said no one was injured and there was no significant property damage.

Lenox said the property owner had obtained a burn permit. He said the department is now requiring residents to get burn permits in person at the fire station on the day that they plan to burn brush.
