PETERBOROUGH — Devon Tatro, 18, of Peterborough was arrested and charged with one count of arson and one count of reckless conduct after an early evening fire Monday at Rockbrook Apartments on Union Street.

Tatro was arrested by State Fire Marshal/Investigator Keith Rodenhiser. Tatro was unable to pay $50,000 cash bail, and was transported to the Hillsborough County House of Corrections. He was scheduled for arraignment this morning in 8th Circuit Court in Jaffrey.

Firefighters responded to multiple calls from adjacent apartments around 5:10 p.m., according to Peterborough Deputy Fire Chief Brian Wall. Callers reported seeing smoke inside and outside the apartment.

When firefighters arrived, they forced entry into the unoccupied residence and went upstairs to the bathroom, where they found the fire. The fire was extinguished very quickly, Wall said, and firefighters initially believed the probable cause was the bathroom fan.

The apartment, number 8 of the Rockbrook Apartments, is the residence of a man and his two sons, according to neighbors at the scene, but no one was home at the time of the fire.

The Peterborough Fire Department was assisted by crews from Jaffrey, Dublin and Hancock.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the NH State Fire Marshal’s Office, Investigator Keith Rodenhiser at (603) 223-4289.
