BENNINGTON — A truck driver died Wednesday afternoon after his tractor-trailer unit went through guardrails on Route 202 and rolled down an embankment, coming to rest upside down in standing water about 50 feet off the road.

The accident happened shortly after noon, according to Bennington Police Chief Steve Campbell. He said the driver, who was a Canadian resident, had picked up a load of lumber at New England Forest Products in Greenfield and was driving north on Route 202, just north of the intersection with Antrim Road near the Monadnock Paper Mill, when the truck went off the road.

“There were no skid marks, no signs of speeding,” Campbell said Wednesday at the accident scene. “Witnesses said he just slowly drifted to the right and went over the guardrail and into the water.”

Campbell said Antrim rescue workers got the driver out of the truck and he was taken to Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough, where he was pronounced dead. Police did not release the man’s name, pending notification to his family.

A N.H. medical examiner was at the accident scene. Campbell said the cause of the accident and the cause of death had not yet been determined.

At 2:30 p.m., the northbound lane of the state highway remained closed, while workers, who had placed booms around the overturned truck to contain any leaks, examined the underside of the truck and trailer, including the gas tanks, prior to removing it.
