Police called to late-night brawl
Up to 15 men were fighting Monday on River Street; 2 men transported to hospital
A fight between several men on River Street on Monday night led to two arrests and two men transported to the hospital.
At 11:45 p.m., Jaffrey police officers responded to River Street for a report of up to 15 people in a brawl, according to police. When police arrived, they found five people on the scene, injured and bleeding. An additional suspect had already fled the scene according to police.
As police arrived on the scene, officers allegedly witnessed Kristopher Powers, 24, of Jaffrey, assaulting an unresponsive man on the ground. The man, a 20-year-old Jaffrey resident, was transported by Jaffrey-Rindge Memorial Ambulance to Monadnock Community Hospital for treatment for his injuries. Another 49-year-old Jaffrey man at the scene was also treated by ambulance personnel for injuries, but was not transported to the hospital.
Police made contact with The Keene Police Department for use of their K9 unit to track down the suspect who fled. With assistance from the responding K9 unit, police apprehended Peter Diana, 22, of Jaffrey.
Powers and Diana were both charged with second degree assault, according to police. Powers was also charged with falsifying physical evidence.
Diana was treated at the scene for his injuries by Jaffrey-Rindge Memorial Ambulance, and was ultimately transported to Monadnock Community Hospital for treatment.
Powers refused bail and was transported to the Cheshire County House of Corrections for detainment. Diana was held without bail at the House of Corrections. Both men were arraigned at the 8th Circuit Court, Jaffrey on Monday. Both Diana and Powers were held in lieu of $5,000 cash bail, and transported back to the House of Corrections.
Police are not releasing any information about the nature of the fight or what instigated it at this time, according to Administrative Assistant to the Police Chief Denise Chatel.
The incident is under an ongoing investigation.
