Hold on recyclables is over

FRANCESTOWN — The town’s Transfer Station was a backed up for a couple days when mixed paper and plastic recyclables were not picked up as scheduled.

The Transfer Station was still accepting trash and can-like recyclables on Jan. 4 and 5, but anyone who wanted to bring any other recyclable material was turned away, Town Administrator Mike Branley said in an interview Wednesday.

“We were having some issues getting some recyclables hauled,” Branley said. “This is the only time this has happened.”

The Northeast Resource Recovery Association is the contracted removal company, but this company sends varying subcontractors to pick up recyclables from week to week, Branley said. One of the trucks for the given subcontractor in the first week of January was in a car accident that week, Branley said. So with one less truck, plus a snowstorm that week and the recent holidays, the paper and plastic recyclables were not picked up by Jan. 4, Branley said.

Transfer Station employee George Cilley told residents on Jan. 4 and 5 they could not accept any more mixed paper or plastic materials, Branley said. But all types of recyclables and materials were once again being accepted by Jan. 8.
