If the Mascenic boys were to beat Conant Tuesday night, they would need an otherworldly shooting performance from Jared Stauffeneker. However, the Vikings scoring leader was unable to get anything going against the tough Oriole defense; he finished with 14 points and, shockingly, didn’t make a single three-pointer.

Instead, the lights-out shooting performance came from Conant sophomore Josh DeGrenier, who was the latest in a long list of Orioles to top the team in scoring, showcasing the depth of the No. 1 team in Division III. DeGrenier came out hot, hitting his first five shots in a row.

“Felt good before the game in warmups, so, you know, I came out feeling it, so I kept shooting,” DeGrenier said. “I like big crowds, rivalry games. It gives me more confidence going into the end of the season and into playoffs.”

DeGrenier finished with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting as the Orioles cruised to a 56-34 win. Rob O’Brien scored 12 on 6-of-6 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds and Eli Hodgson scored 15 to go with his seven boards. CJ Bilodeau, a sophomore energy guy off the bench, provided his signature spark; he didn’t score a single point, but grabbed nine rebounds and kept his team fired up.

“He gets me going, he gets everyone going,” DeGrenier said. “He’s yelling and screaming all the time.”

With Stauffeneker struggling to score, the Vikings turned to their own emotional leader, senior captain Matt Cyr. Cyr was able to find success on the pick and roll as Conant’s defenders collapsed on Stauffeneker, and he took it hard to the rack and finished under duress time and again.

“I score when I need to,” Cyr said. “I’m not really a big scorer on the team. Most people don’t look to shut me down, but if I need to step up, I can do it. I know I can. All five guys that we have on the court, they can step up, they can make shots.”

Cyr is that classic puzzle piece that successful teams need to keep them going when times get tough.

“As a captain, that’s my job,” Cyr said. “I’ve got to get my guys going. For emotion, it starts at the top, so I have to be a leader and set an example.”

Cyr finished with 11 points on the night and Shane Rautiola, who has developed into a solid wing shooter, scored seven on a pair of threes and a free throw. Mascenic (5-7) now sits near the middle of the DIII playoff pack with six games remaining. A couple more wins should ensure them a decent spot in the postseason.

“We have to execute, keep working hard, bring the effort every single night, and we know that if we do that, we have a good shot,” Cyr said.

Mascenic hosts Fall Mountain (9-4) on Friday night at 7 p.m. Conant (13-1) travels to Stevens (5-9) Friday night.
