  • Elizabeth McGurk capped off her hgih school running career with a win in the 3,200 meters at the Division III Track & Field Championships this spring.

After the season openers for the Conant and Wilton-Lyndeborough track & field teams were cancelled in early April, the teams had to wait almost two more weeks until their next scheduled meet.

And when an icy mix blanketed the region on Friday afternoon, Conant’s home opener was also put in jeopardy.

But with only so many meets on the schedule, there was no way this one would be cancelled.

So with some nicer weather on Saturday morning and the help of a few shovels, the five-team meet was held as planned and many athletes had strong showings.

Conant senior Katie Tonyai showed she was in midseason form with a pair of wins in the 100 and 200 meter sprints. Her times of 12.70 in the 100 and 26.0 in the 200 both automatically qualified her for the Division III Championships.

Conant senior Erika Donovan also had quite a day. She won the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, along with the triple jump and also finished second in the pole vault to teammate Margaret Maloy. Maloy reached a height of seven feet and also was fifth in the 1,600 meters.

Mascenic sophomore Tim Fafard cruised to a win in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:36.4 and placed second in the 800 and has qualified for the D-III meet in three events so far.

The same goes for Mascenic senior Elizabeth McGurk. She has now qualified in the 800, 1,600, and 3,200 after placing second in the 800 and 1,600 on Saturday.

Nathan Wheeler, a sophomore at Conant, won the high jump eclipsing five feet, four inches and took fourth in the 200.

WLC’s Robert Hayden took third in the boys shot put with a throw of 34 feet, five inches and Conant’s Justin Hasse finished fourth, just four inches shy of Hayden’s distance. Haase also took second in the discus reaching 105 feet, five inches.

WLC’s Hannah Bailey placed third in the girls shot put, one spot behind Conant’s Courtney Millette, and was also fifth in the discus.

Shannia Aho, a junior at Conant, was fifth in both the 100 and 200.

Austin Goulet and Kyle Moreau, both of Conant, placed second and third in the long jump, while teammate Adam Teger finished fourth.

Conant’s Colby Whitcomb took fourth in the 1,600, two spots ahead of teammate Tyler Pimental.

On the girls side, Conant finished second to Hopkinton with 82 points, followed by Mascenic, 18, and WLC, 14. The Conant boys were third with 49 points, while Mascenic finished fourth and WLC fifth.

Conant travels to Merrimack Valley on Saturday, while Mascenic and WLC both compete at Sant Bani today.
