For 10 minutes on Wednesday afternoon, nobody at the Conant and Mascenic softball game really knew what was happening.

One moment it looked as though the Vikings would get out of a one-out jam with two runners in scoring position in the fourth with an inning-ending double play to preserve a 5-5 tie. The next moment, two Conant players were crossing the plate — with Mascenic’s defense already in the dugout thinking the inning was over — to give the Orioles a two-run lead and one that would eventually turn into an 11-5 victory.

It all started when sophomore Vanessa Lemire struck out. The third strike was dropped, forcing Mascenic’s freshman catcher Lizzie Brassard to throw to first. It seemed like an easy play and when Jenna Sirois broke for home, Elizabeth Martel’s return throw to the plate was perfect to complete the would-be double play.

There was only one problem — Lemire was ruled safe at first. And even though Lemire and Conant’s Heather Bilodeau, who reached third on the play, walked back toward the dug out area, the two base runners returned to their respective bases and began their run for home.

“I saw her off the base to catch the ball and make the throw,” said Conant coach Tom Lambert. “They were still out [of the dug out] and I told them to go back.”

The Mascenic players did not move, unaware of why their opponents had returned to the base paths. After both players crossed home plate, Mascenic coach Frank Cadwell met with the umpires. It was ruled that both players scored to give Conant a 7-5 lead. Cadwell protested the game, but in the end it did not change the final outcome.

“My point was that those two runners went into the dugout and once they’ve done that, they’ve conceded the out,” said Cadwell. “I was told that they did not go into the dugout area.”

Mascenic led 5-4 entering the inning before Hannah Buckjune, who doubled to lead off the frame, scored on a Vikings’ throwing error. After Mascenic returned to the field looking for the final out, back-to-back doubles by Teresa DiTommaso and Ivy Chalke put Conant up three.

The Orioles would tack on three more in the sixth on Sierra Landry’s two-run single and Katie Chadbourne’s RBI triple.

“This is the hardest we’ve hit in three weeks,” said Lambert. “Finally they’re seeing the ball and making good contact.”

The Vikings took an early 3-0 lead through one a half innings, accounting for more runs than in a 7-0 loss to the Orioles on April 22. Mascenic had just three hits on that day, but have improved since then.

“The kids are really playing well,” said Cadwell. “They just haven’t won a lot in the last few years. If they had half the confidence in themselves that I have in them, we’d have a different record.”

Conant scoring four times in the second for a 4-3 edge. Buckjune doubled to knock in two and Sirois singled to drive in another.

A Conant error in the top of the fourth led to one run and Amber Salo’s double gave Mascenic the lead before things got interesting in the last of the frame.

Mascenic hosts Hinsdale today and Conant takes on Kearsarge on Friday.
