• Rookie of the Fall: Sylvie Holding, ConVal girls soccer

She’s really only a freshman? Could have fooled me! Holding already has all the tools that it takes to be a soccer standout. It seemed like every ball she struck this year was on net, out ahead to lead a streaking teammate or right on one of her forwards’ feet. It will be exciting to watch her abilities develop over the next three soccer seasons.

ConVal’s girls soccer team defeated Manchester West 6-0 on Tuesday. The Cougars now sit at 7-8 on the season, good enough for the 11th spot in the DII standings and all but guaranteeing them a playoff berth.

Goals were scored by Zoe Paige, Haley Zanga, Kiera Bell, Meghan Close, Jess Nerz and Sylvie Holding, who put her first-half score in the net by bending a long shot from the left corner. Her ball was tipped by the West goalie; it hit the crossbar and bounced three times up and down on the bar before deflecting in off the keeper’s outstretched hand.

Paige, Nerz, Zanga and Close were honored along with fellow seniors Beth Cheaney and Olivia Thomas on Senior Night.
