Scholar to discuss Civil War home front
The Temple Historical Society’s spring meeting will feature Dartmouth professor emeritus and Civil War scholar Jere Daniell on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall.
In his talk, “New Hampshire Towns and the Civil War,” Daniell will focus on the homefront, not the fighting. Daniell will describe both formal town actions and non-governmental community responses. Topics include organizing aid societies; ostracizing war opponents; rewarding men who enlisted; helping citizens avoid military service; celebrating victories; and postwar memorialization.
Daniell will illustrate his general observations with an emphasis on Temple’s story, which he says has unique and surprising elements.
The event is free and open to the public. For information call Anne Lunt at 878-3443.
