Man charged with sexual assault of 9-year-old girl
BENNINGTON — A Bennington man is facing a felony charge for two counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault, after staff at Monadnock Community Hospital working with a 9-year-old victim contacted police last week.
A 9-year-old Bennington girl was treated at the hospital last week, and on Wednesday hospital staff from the emergency department contacted police with possible suspect information, Police Chief Steve Campbell said Monday. Campbell would not comment on the content of the phone call, except to say that hospital staff provided police with the name of the alleged perpetrator, Shawn Mooney, 26, of Bennington.
Police arrested Mooney at 9 a.m. on Thursday at his home on Antrim Road in Bennington. The charges are considered aggravated because the victim is under the age of 13, Campbell said.
After the arrest, police said Mooney was transported to the 6th Circuit Court, Hillsborough, on Thursday, where he was arraigned. The arraignment resulted in Mooney being held at the Hillsborough County House of Correction in lieu of $50,000 cash bail. By press time on Monday, Campbell said Mooney was still in custody. Campbell declined to comment on whether the police are investigating other suspects or not.
A probable cause hearing is expected to be held in February sometime. Mooney could face additional charges, Campbell said, but the chief would not comment further on what the additional charges might be.
During the arrest, Bennington police were assisted by officers from Antrim, Francestown, Greenfield and Hancock.
