2 arrested for taking washer

BENNINGTON — A man and a woman were charged after attempting to steal a washing machine from a Whittemore Lake Road East residence that was unoccupied at the time.

At 2 p.m. on May 9, Bennington Police Chief Steve Campbell said he found Michael Flagg, 55, of Keene, and Dawn Deschenes, 51, of Wilton, attempting to load a washing machine into a vehicle from a residence used as a summer home. Bennington Police Officer John Giffin said in a phone interview Wednesday that several items had been stolen from the property prior to May 9, including a car, and that Chief Campbell was there to check the residence when he found a theft in progress.

Both Flagg and Deschenes were charged for theft of the washing machine and trespassing, while Flagg was additionally charged with theft of a motor vehicle that had been taken from the same property three weeks ago. Flagg had an outstanding warrant stemming from that charge.

Flagg and Deschenes are scheduled to appear in Hillsborough District Court in June.
