Tickets for open container issued
To the editor:
Ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law. The next time you head up to Crotched Mountain Ski and Ride to do some skiing and head out to the parking lot to cook up some burgers on your grill for a quick lunch break, think twice before opening an alcoholic beverage. The Bennington police are handing out tickets of “Must Appear” in court to anyone caught drinking alcohol on the premises. We have been season ticket holders at Crotched Mountain for the past nine years. We tailgate with other season tickets holders there every weekend.
Three weeks ago, we were out there and the Bennington police handed us a ticket to appear in court for having an alcoholic beverage. It is not posted anywhere on the property. We contacted the prosecutor prior to the court date asking if there was any chance in getting it dismissed as we did not know that is was illegal to drink alcohol in their parking lot. He said, “Ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law.”
So the next time you are standing around the bonfire for Midnight Madness, drinking a beer, remember you are breaking the law and the penalty will be a day in court with possible loss of wages and a minimum fine of $150, plus court fees.
